Description
Rooted is a one-of-a-kind vessel, hand turned from freshly felled sycamore. I created it as part of the Held Forms collection, which explores how green wood changes as it dries naturally.
I turned the vessel while the timber still contained its natural moisture. As it dried, the wood moved gently and settled into its own distinctive form. Rather than forcing the timber into perfect symmetry, I chose to celebrate those natural changes.
The thin walls allow light to pass through the sycamore and reveal its subtle grain. At the centre, natural fungal staining creates a striking contrast with the surrounding pale timber. Together, these features give the vessel depth, warmth and individuality.
Every tree grows under different conditions. Consequently, every piece of timber develops its own markings, colour and character. Rooted captures those natural variations and preserves them in a simple, contemporary form.
Display Rooted as a sculptural object or alongside dried stems. Either way, it offers a quiet reminder of the beauty found in natural materials and skilled craftsmanship.

The Timber
Rooted is turned from rowan, a native British hardwood that is rarely available in large sizes, making each substantial piece especially distinctive. It has a fine, even texture and subtle grain that suits delicate turned forms. Freshly cut rowan often appears pale. However, as it matures, the grain becomes more pronounced and the timber develops a warmer tone. These natural changes give every finished piece its own character.
