Description
Gathered is a one-of-a-kind vessel, hand turned from green sycamore wood as part of my Held Forms collection.
The collection explores how freshly felled timber changes as it dries and how those natural changes influence the finished form.
I turned the vessel while the timber still contained its natural moisture. As it dried, the wood moved gently and developed its own distinctive shape. Rather than hiding those changes, I allowed them to become an important part of the design.
One feature immediately caught my attention. A natural bark inclusion sits just beneath the surface, revealing one of the many hidden layers within the tree. Instead of removing this feature, I chose to celebrate it as part of the vessel’s story.
When I first completed Gathered, the timber appeared almost plain. However, as the wood has continued to mature, the grain has become increasingly visible. As a result, the vessel continues to develop long after leaving the lathe.
Every piece of wood is different. For that reason, I embrace natural variation, movement and grain rather than trying to make every vessel identical. Consequently, no two pieces can ever be the same.
Display Gathered as a sculptural object or alongside other handmade pieces. Alternatively, pair it with other vessels from the Held Forms collection. You can also explore more handmade wooden bowls, vessels and vases.
About Sycamore Wood
Sycamore is one of Britain’s most versatile hardwoods. Woodturners value it for its fine, even texture and pale colour. Over time, sycamore develops a warmer tone while retaining its elegant appearance.
