Description
This hand turned English walnut bowl celebrates the warmth and beauty of one of Britain’s finest hardwoods. I created it from a rough turned blank generously given to me by fellow woodworker Natasha Craig in June 2025. Allowing the blank to dry before its final turning helped create a stable bowl while preserving the timber’s natural character.
English walnut is prized for its rich brown colour, flowing grain and timeless appearance. As I completed the final turning, the grain revealed subtle variations that make this bowl completely unique. Consequently, no two walnut bowls are ever the same.
The bowl has a simple contemporary form that highlights the timber rather than competing with it. Therefore, it works equally well as a decorative piece or for everyday use around the home.
Finally, I finished the bowl with Natasha Craig’s own natural wood oil, followed by her beeswax polish. This finish enhances the grain, provides a soft lustre and protects the timber while allowing its natural beauty to shine through.
