Description
Held Open is a one-of-a-kind vessel, hand turned from green wood as part of my I created it as part of my Held Forms collection. The collection explores how freshly felled timber changes as it dries and how those natural changes can shape the finished piece.
I turned the vessel while the sycamore still contained its natural moisture. As it dried, the wood moved gently and developed its own distinctive form. Rather than forcing the timber into a perfect shape, I allowed it to express its natural character.
The simple form and fine walls draw attention to one carefully considered detail. An end-grain fire tree insert in the base reveals a tree’s annual growth rings. As a result, the base becomes an important part of the piece, rewarding closer inspection and offering a quiet connection to the tree.
Every piece of timber has its own character. For that reason, I celebrate natural features such as grain variation, gentle movement and individual markings. Consequently, no two vessels can ever be the same.
Display Held Open as a sculptural object or alongside other handmade pieces. Either way, it offers a thoughtful reminder of the beauty found in natural materials. Explore more handmade wooden bowls, vessels and vases.
The Story Behind the Growth Rings
Freshly felled timber continues to change long after it has been turned. As moisture leaves the wood, the form settles naturally and subtle movement develops. This process gives every green wood vessel its own unique shape and character.
