About the Woodturning Tool Sharpening Clinic
Struggling to get clean cuts on the lathe or unsure whether your tools are truly sharp? This woodturning tool sharpening clinic is designed to demystify sharpening and give you the confidence to maintain your own tools effectively.
During this practical, small-group session, you’ll learn the core principles of sharpening woodturning tools, including bevel angles, tool presentation and grinder setup. We’ll look at when to grind and how sharpening directly affects control, safety and surface finish when turning.
We will also discuss the different sharpening set ups and options available for your sharpening set up at home.
Hands-On Sharpening and Tool Advice
You’re encouraged to bring your own tools — including spindle gouges, bowl gouges, skews and scrapers — so you can receive individual advice and sharpen tools under guidance. The emphasis is on understanding why sharpening works, not just following a recipe, so you leave able to repeat the process at home.
This clinic is suitable for beginners who want a solid foundation, as well as more experienced turners who want to refine their sharpening technique or troubleshoot persistent issues.
By the end of the session, you’ll have sharper tools, clearer understanding and the confidence to keep them that way.
