Bowl Turning Intermediate 2 Day Course
This hands-on bowl turning intermediate 2 day course is designed for woodturners who are ready to expand their skills and creativity. Working with a variety of British hardwoods, you’ll learn the essential techniques for turning a range of bowl forms using different mounting methods and finishes.
Over the two days, you’ll complete these three projects, each designed to teach specific skills and build your confidence at the lathe:
Breakfast Bowl – A classic 7″ diameter sycamore bowl mounted on a screw chuck, with the foot removed and an oil finish.
Large Fruit Bowl – A 10″ ash bowl with a recessed foot and rolled rim, finished with finished to a high-gloss.
- Decorative Display Bowl – A deeper 8″ ogee shaped and ebonised bowl with a pedestal foot and decorative beads finished with a wax oil blend.
Throughout the course, you’ll learn:
How to safely use faceplates, screw chucks, and reversing methods
Techniques for turning flat, curved, and rolled forms
Foot and rim design for both function and style
Surface decoration and a variey of finishing options (with a handout to take home)
How to make and apply your own ebonising solution at home (with a handout to take home)
- How to sharpen short and long grind bowl gouges ( with a handout to take home). Bring your own gouges, use and learn how to sharpen them.
All tools, materials and protective equipment are provided. You’ll leave with three beautifully finished pieces, a deeper understanding of turning techniques and the confidence to continue exploring this creative craft.
Suitable for those with some woodturning experience—ideal if you’ve completed a beginner’s course and want to progress.

Our Facilities
The workshop provides individual lathes, complete sets of turning tools, safety gear, and all necessary materials for each student.
Located in a courtyard surrounded by other craftspeople and artists it is a welcoming, relaxing environment for visitors.
Other amenities include a generous car park and accessible toilets.
Lunch
If you’re coming for the whole day lunch will be provided in the form of a selection of sandwiches from Warings, the local award winning bakery.
If you have any food allergies, intolerances or dietary preferences e.g. vegetarian, please let us know. There will also be tea, coffee and water available through the day but feel free to bring your own snacks and/or a water bottle.
Health and Safety Information
Turning generates a lot of wood shavings and sawdust so you will be provided with a face shield and turner’s smock. The workshop is also fitted with dust extraction.
Please wear old clothes and sensible footwear, no sandals. Also no hooded tops with dangly drawstrings. Tie back long hair and remove bulky watches, rings or bangles.
If you have any medical issues or are taking any medication you think we should be aware of, please let us know on arrival.
Cancellation Policy
To ensure your booking the course must be paid for in full. If you need to change the date of your course this can be accommodated up to 2 weeks prior to the course. Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts.

By Bus:
Take the 2 or 2a bus from Reading and get off at the Amners Farm Road stop. From the bus stop it is a 5 minute walk to the workshop.
