The Joy of my Creative Woodturning Community on Instagram

Liz writes: Woodturning is my passion. There’s something magical about taking a rough piece of wood and transforming it into a beautiful work of art. And what makes this craft even more special is the community that surrounds it. Today, I want to share with you the joy I find in my creative Instagram woodturning community, specifically through the hashtag #TurningToolTuesday.

Finding Inspiration

Love Heartwood's instagram grid.

As a woodturner, inspiration can come from anywhere. It could be a walk in nature, observing the intricate patterns on tree bark, or simply browsing through social media. And that’s where Instagram comes in. The platform has become a treasure trove of creativity, connecting artists from all over the world, and this is how I met @richard_findley and @gorillabowls Anthony Lorton.

Engaging with Richard Findley

Richard Findley is one of the most inspiring woodturners on Instagram. His artistry and attention to detail are truly awe-inspiring. I reached out to him, expressing my admiration for his work, and to my delight he responded warmly.

Richard has been very generous with his woodturning knowledge, I see him as a  ‘mentor’, as he has guided me through new techniques and offered valuable advice. Through Richard, I have learnt about different types of wood and have been encouraged to strive for better control of my craft as a woodturner.

Connecting with Anthony Lorton

I’ve also discovered another talented woodturner Anthony Lorton @GorillaBowls. I was fascinated by his unique style and use of innovative techniques like laser etching. Intrigued by Anthony’s approach to woodturning, I reached out to him, he was super friendly, helpful and more than willing to collaborate.

Through the #TurningToolTuesday hashtag both Richard and Anthony have shared not only their favourite tools but also their  approach to turning. Anthony is particularly honest about how it makes him feel. As makers, this aspect of turning is at the heart of the process for us, so it’s great to share our thoughts on that as well as the workshop tools we use.

Sharing the Journey on Instagram

Every Tuesday, we – myself as @Love_Heartwood, and @Richard_Findley and @GorillaBowls, post about the woodturning tools we use, and how to use them safely and correctly. We encourage and invite others to share their tools as well, creating a supportive and inclusive space for woodturners of all levels.

Building a Community

What started as a simple hashtag has quickly grown into something much bigger. Woodturners from all corners of the world are using #TurningToolTuesday to showcase their work, seek advice, and celebrate their achievements. The community that has formed around this hashtag is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.

We share tips and tricks, celebrate each other’s successes, and offer words of encouragement and humour during moments of frustration. The camaraderie within this community is truly heartwarming. Woodturning has gone from being a solitary hobby to a shared passion that connects people from different backgrounds and skill levels.

And most importantly, I’ve realised that creativity knows no bounds when nurtured within a supportive community.
