love heartwood’s ethics
What’s at the heart of Love HeartWood?
Our disposable culture has caused huge environmental problems and we live with the guilt of our society’s wastefulness every day. This was the lesson I took away from my product design studies. To combat this Love HeartWood operates with the following code of ethics:
I use wood from a variety of sources. The green, or fresh, timber comes from sustainably managed local sources. I also use recycled wood from other woodworker’s waste streams.
I don’t use imported timber which may have come from illegal logging. I don’t use rare exotic hardwoods which have travelled halfway round the world creating a large carbon footprint.
I minimising my waste by using the off cuts from larger items to make the smaller ones. Even the sawdust created is used as pet bedding for guinea pigs and rabbits.
The paints and finishes used are plant based and completely natural. This means they’re healthy and contain no VOC’s.
I don’t use “normal” paints or wood treatments which although technically safe, come from petrochemical derivatives and are essentially forms of plastic.
Every product I make is vegan friendly. None of the materials or finishes contain animal derivatives. For example, sustainable cork cord from Portugal, not leather, is used for the Acorn Collection necklaces.
I am committed to ethical business practices and believe in the living wage. So I ensure when sourcing materials that everything is produced ethically and responsibly. I also try to support other small businesses.
There is absolutely no plastic in or on any of my products or their packaging.
Items are presented in a reusable cotton bag or a recyclable cardboard gift box. Shipping boxes are made from 75% recycled fibres which are 100% recyclable and secured with paper tape. All paper and card used is recycled and recyclable. Twine and string is made from sustainable jute or hemp dyed with natural dyes.
As a toy maker and parent safety is of paramount importance to me. So all the toys that I make have been fully ce tested and bear the CE mark to prove it. In fact, they exceed the requirements of the EU Toy Safety Directives 2009/48/EC.
All of these amazing organisations are a massive support and inspiration.
Traceability is integral to ethical business practices. Here you’ll find a list of my main suppliers. I endeavour to work with other eco conscious, small businesses that are as local as possible.
